The Beauty of a White Shirt: The Wardrobe Consultant’s White Shirt Edit

The White Shirt Edit

Truth be told, this was not the topic scheduled for the blog this week. But what is the saying? Man plans and G-d laughs? Let me give you the back story…

The Closet Trick

Last week I posted a reel on my Instagram with a closet tip. To my complete surprise and amazement, it started going viral! To date there are over 500,000+ views - which for a micro account like mine is a pretty big deal.

The Closet Trick, in a nutshell, was to hang everything in your closet backward. Then when an item is worn, hang it back the proper way. This way, you can see an easy visual overview of what is actually being worn. By doing this trick with the hangers, it’s easier to part with the pieces during a closet cleanse when I can confirm that I haven’t worn it, at the very least, since my last closet cleanse

A common misconception in the comments on TikTok was that this was to keep track of what I’ve already worn so that I don’t wear it again. That is absolutely not the purpose of the closet trick. The purpose is simply to see what I never wear, but most pieces in my closet are worn over and over after the hanger is turned back the proper way.

But the funny thing is…

I received as many, if not more, comments about the white shirt I was wearing as I did about the closet tip!

The shirt getting all the attention was a little number by Doen that I picked up over winter break. I am wearing a size small. And when the reel was posted, the exact top was already sold out. (but the good news is I found it!!) Interestingly, even though I bought the shirt in December 2021, I didn’t really start wearing it until spring 2022. Usually, I’m like a little kid when I get something new, I want to wear it right away - that’s how I know I really love it. But with this piece, I didn’t. That timeframe didn’t concern me for a few reasons:

  1. This particular shirt is more of a warmer weather, spring-summer piece.

  2. Because I love white tops, they are the kind of wardrobe staple that always needs a refresh.

  3. Since a white top is a go-to piece for me year after year, I know when I find one I like, it will definitely get worn.

My White Shirt Love Through the Years

I went through my old photos and found a whole bunch of outfits featuring a white top. The cool thing is that even though some of these are from as early as 2017, they’re classic and I’d still wear them today.

The zillion inquiries about this white top, combined with my penchant for white shirts, got me thinking about doing a round-up of some of my favorites. And, of course, I’ve got you covered with how to style them too.
