Fashion for the Guys: How to Build a Comfortable & Versatile Men's Wardrobe

Typically, like 90% of the time, I focus on women's fashion and lifestyle. However, I do work with a few select men as styling clients. And I have a husband and two sons that I “dress”. So, while most of my readers are women (at least that’s what Google Analytics tells me), my gut tells me that you may be like me and have a guy or guys in your life who rely on you for fashion advice.

The Struggle is Real: Guys Need Comfort Too

In the same way, we ladies all went bonkers for the “sweatpant jeans” because they look polished but feel super yummy. Men too, possibly more than us women, crave comfortable clothes. And yet, they can’t always go out in athletic gear.

I recently took my middle son, Joey, shopping. He graduated college this year and needed to get rid of the frat party attire and, well, look like a grown-up. He didn’t want to go the route of dockers and a golf shirt because that felt a bit like Jake from the State Farm commercials.

For your information, these clothes are not just for the post-college crowd. My husband and father-in-law (who is 80) also wear and love these pants and tops. They each style them differently, but the items themselves are ageless.

The Challenge: To find clothes that are both comfortable and stylish. And that he felt good in.

The Solution: A Versatile Wardrobe for the Modern Man

We focused on building a versatile capsule wardrobe with pieces that could be mixed and matched to create a variety of outfits suitable for different occasions.

The Goal: To have a concise, interchangeable, COMFORTABLE wardrobe that he could mix and match.

21 pieces - endless outfit options

  • 4 pants - all with stretch (and style)

  • 6 shirts - all soft with stretch. Some casual and some could be worn with a suit.

  • 3 sweaters/sweatshirts - these can be layered or won on their own.

  • 2 toppers- one blazer and one casual overshirt - both with stretch

  • 2 belts - these are the ultimate outfit finisher

  • 4 shoes - we probably could have done just 2 shoes (one sneaker and one boot) but Joey wears sneakers all the time, so this was important to him.

The added layer was that my son, Joey, needs comfort. He was that young child who freaked out if there was a tag in his shirt or an itchy blanket, so comfort is key. Yet, he has a really aesthetic eye and didn’t want to compromise on style.

With permission, I’m sharing his post-college haul. He’s thrilled, I’m thrilled, and he looks amazeballs (yes, we can use that word for a guy, too)!

Because Joey (who is the nicest and most easygoing young man) cringes at the thought of having to be on my Instagram or take photos, I’m showing you how these all work as outfits rather than making him actually model them.
